How to Verify Your Domain on Google
Introduction
Verifying your website with Google Search Console allows you to confirm ownership of your domain and access important tools that help you monitor your website's presence in Google Search.
Once your domain has been verified, you'll be able to:
- Submit your sitemap
- Monitor how Google indexes your pages
- Identify crawling and indexing issues
- View search performance and SEO reports
- Receive notifications about problems affecting your website
eDirectory includes a built-in Webmaster Tools feature that allows you to verify your website by simply pasting Google's verification tag—no programming or source code editing required.
Before You Begin
Before verifying your website, make sure you have:
- A Google Account
- Administrator access to your eDirectory Site Manager
- A live domain connected to your website
Important: The website URL you verify in Google Search Console must exactly match your website's preferred domain configuration (including www or non-www). Using the wrong version may cause indexing issues, sitemap errors, and inaccurate reports.
Step 1: Verify Your Preferred Domain
Before adding your website to Google Search Console, confirm which version of your domain your website uses.
1.1. In your eDirectory Site Manager, navigate to Promote → SEO Center → Redirect Manager
1.2. Verify that:
- Your preferred domain is configured correctly (with or without www).
- Secure Pages (HTTPS) are enabled.
Example:

Important
The URL you add later in Google Search Console must exactly match the preferred domain configured here.

If your website redirects to the www version, always use the www version throughout the verification process.
Step 2: Add Your Website to Google Search Console
2.1. Sign in to Google Search Console.
2.2. Click Add Property.
2.3. Select URL Prefix.
We recommend using the URL Prefix option because it is fully compatible with eDirectory's verification tool.
2.4. Enter your complete website address exactly as it appears in your browser.
For example:
Important
Do not include a trailing slash (/ ) at the end of the URL.

2.5. Click Continue.

Step 3: Verify Ownership Using the HTML Tag
Google offers several verification methods.
For eDirectory websites, we recommend using the HTML Tag verification method.
3.1. Select HTML Tag.

3.2. Google will display a meta tag similar to the example below:
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" />
3.3. Copy the entire meta tag provided by Google.

Step 4: Add the Verification Tag to eDirectory
4.1. Log in to your eDirectory Site Manager.
4.2. Navigate to Promote → SEO Center → Webmaster Tools

4.3. Paste the complete HTML verification tag into the Google Verification field.

4.4. Click Save Changes.
eDirectory will automatically insert the verification tag into your website's <head> section.
No manual code editing is required.
Step 5: Complete the Verification
5.1. Return to Google Search Console.
5.2. Click Verify.

If everything has been configured correctly, Google will immediately confirm ownership of your website.

Your domain is now verified.
Keeping Your Verification Active
Google periodically checks your website to confirm ownership.
For this reason, we recommend leaving the verification tag in your eDirectory Site Manager permanently.
Removing the verification tag may cause Google to revoke your verified ownership, preventing access to Search Console features until the site is verified again.
Troubleshooting
Google says the verification failed.
Verify that:
- The HTML tag was copied completely.
- The entire meta tag was pasted into Promote → SEO Center → Webmaster Tools.
- You clicked Save Changes.
- You're verifying the same domain configured as your preferred domain in Redirect Manager.
- Your website is publicly accessible.
I verified the wrong version of my domain.
Google treats these as different websites:
If your preferred domain uses www, remove the incorrect property from Google Search Console and create a new property using the correct URL.
Always use the same version consistently for:
- Domain verification
- Sitemap submission
- Search Console reports
