How to Verify Your Domain on Bing
Introduction
Verifying your website with Bing Webmaster Tools allows you to prove ownership of your domain and gain access to valuable SEO tools that help monitor your website's visibility in Bing search results.
Once your website has been verified, you'll be able to:
- Monitor how Bing crawls your website.
- Submit sitemaps.
- Identify indexing issues.
- View search performance reports.
- Improve your website's SEO on Bing.
This guide will walk you through verifying your eDirectory website using the HTML Meta Tag verification method.
Before You Begin
Before verifying your domain with Bing, make sure you have:
- A Microsoft account.
- Access to Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Access to the Site Manager area of eDirectory.
- A live domain connected to your website.
Important: Before verifying your domain, make sure your preferred domain (with or without www) has already been configured correctly in your eDirectory Site Manager. The URL you verify in Bing should exactly match the domain visitors use to access your website.
Shared Hosting Notice
Websites hosted on eDirectory Shared Hosting cannot currently be verified with Bing Webmaster Tools.
Bing's crawler has been generating an unusually high volume of aggressive bot traffic against websites hosted on our shared infrastructure, which has caused service interruptions for customers. To protect the stability and availability of all websites hosted on our shared servers, Bing has been blocked.
Because of this, Bing domain verification is currently not available for websites hosted on our Shared Hosting environment.
You can follow this guide if:
- You own the eDirectory source code and host the website on your own server.
- Your website is hosted on an eDirectory Dedicated Server.
- Your website is self-hosted.
Step 1: Add Your Website to Bing Webmaster Tools
1.1. Log in to Bing Webmaster Tools
Visit Bing Webmaster Tools and sign in with your Microsoft account.
If you don't already have an account, create one before continuing.

1.2. Add Your Website
Click Add Site.
Choose the option to add your website manually.
Enter your complete website URL, including:
- https://
- www (if applicable)
For example:
Click Add.

Step 2: Choose the HTML Meta Tag Verification Method
After adding your website, Bing will present several verification methods.
Select HTML Meta Tag.

Bing will generate a verification meta tag similar to:
<meta name="msvalidate.01" content="XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" />
Copy the entire meta tag.
Step 3: Add the Verification Tag to eDirectory
3.1. Open Webmaster Tools
Log in to your eDirectory Site Manager. Navigate to Promote → SEO Center → Webmaster Tools

3.2. Paste the Bing Verification Tag
Locate the Bing / Yahoo Meta Tag field.
Paste the complete HTML meta tag that you copied from Bing Webmaster Tools.

3.3. Save Your Changes
Click Save Changes. eDirectory will automatically insert the verification tag into your website's <head> section.
Step 4: Verify Your Website
Return to Bing Webmaster Tools. Click Verify.
Bing will search your website for the verification tag.
If everything has been configured correctly, your website ownership will be confirmed.

Important Considerations
- Keep the verification tag on your website after verification is complete.
- Removing the tag may cause Bing to lose ownership verification.
- Make sure the verified URL exactly matches your preferred domain (including www if applicable).
- If you recently changed your domain, update the verification accordingly.
Troubleshooting
Bing says it cannot verify my website.
Verify that:
- The verification tag was copied completely.
- The tag was pasted into Promote → SEO Center → Webmaster Tools.
- You clicked Save Changes.
- The domain entered in Bing exactly matches your website's preferred domain.
- Your website is publicly accessible.
The verification was working before but now it has failed.
This usually happens because:
- The verification tag was removed from your website.
- The website domain changed.
- The website now redirects to a different domain.
Restore the verification tag and try verifying again.
I cannot verify my website on Bing.
If your website is hosted on eDirectory Shared Hosting, this is expected.
As explained earlier, Bing traffic is currently blocked on our shared hosting infrastructure due to aggressive bot activity.
Domain verification is currently available only for:
- Self-hosted websites.
- Dedicated Server customers.
- Customers hosting their own copy of eDirectory.
Conclusion
Congratulations!
Your Bing domain verification has now been configured successfully.
Once your website has been verified, you'll have access to Bing Webmaster Tools, allowing you to monitor indexing, submit sitemaps, review search performance, and improve your website's visibility in Bing search results.
